be taken aback

be greatly surprised 

e.g. She was completely taken aback by his anger.


bring down

cause someone to lose power.

e.g. The scandal may bring down the government.

come in for

receive sth, especially something unpleasant.

e.g. The government's economic policies have come in for a lot of criticism.

 


cut in

interrupt someone while they are speaking.

e.g. She kept cutting in on our conversation.

get back at

take revenge.

e.g. I'll find a way of getting back at him!

set out

start to do something.

e.g. She set out to break the world record.


stir up

cause problems for someone else.

e,g, He said senior government officials were trying to stir up ethnic tension.

take to

start liking something or someone.

e.g. He hasn't taken to his new school.
